Making the Monster Chef Clip.

As I mentioned previously we had Vince John of 1 Love Media in to film a section of the Monster Chef show. Chris Brown (Mr Brown’s Pig) who plays Ratspewtin and is the co producer of the show and I decided to go for the opening scene where Chef and Ratty decide to start a Web show because they have no money and need to raise interest in their Monstrous Cooking. You can see the very simple story board in my previous Post called Flu Stew.

So on Vince’s advice I set up our little Marquee in the Workshop to film in. It’s great, It looks like this;

In the Workshop of Puppets and Pandemonium

Filming Monster Chef
Preparations nearly done

The Marquee is staying up now, it will help to keep the warmth in during the winter. It’s a nice set up, going to work is like being at a festival, I love it. The Par 56 light cans went up easily, connected to the metal frame of the tent and running through a dimmer board on the side. The lighting looks great as you can see from this photo (also taken by Vince);

We used headset mics, and ran them through cubase so the speach could be recorded separately while the filming took place. Afterwards I changed this information into an AIFF format for Vince to sync. with the film. The result has considerably less of an echo than if the sound had been left to bounce around the workshop.

Anyway, the filming went well, Vince took various different camera angles of the scene and numerous close-ups of the gruesome ingredients that go into the flu stew. He then did a damn fine job of the edit. Check out the end result;

Filming is fun but the real reason we have made this clip is to try to create a demand for the live performance. Hopefully it will help us to get lots of bookings for the show over the next year or so. Fingers crossed (while busy typing with them, which isn’t easy!)

Flu Stew Video

Really excited! We are going to be filming one of Monster Chefs recipes tomorrow with Vince John of 1 Love Media.

The basic story to go with the story board above is;

Beginning; Music> Air on a G string
Monster Chef (MC) in kitchen, unhappy. Doing his accounts- Not good financially.
Ratty enters stage left from fridge.
They decide to make a web show about Monster Cooking to promote themselves. They whip away a cloth that covers the kitchen surface to reveal the Monster Chef sign.
Middle: The Duo make ‘Flu Stew’. A large pot is procured.
Various horrible ingredients come off the shelves (stage right) and from fridge (stage left) and put into the pot. There is a hole in the pot and surface for the ingrediants to fall to the floor.
End; The pot starts to smoke (smoke machine). The stew is ready when it starts to get out of the pot. Chef whacks it repeatedly with a baseball bat until it gets back in.
They taste the stew. Its horrible.
Chef Chucks pot over his head to back stage.
Theme Music.

Got to get the workshop set up so everything is prepared for a smooth start in the morning.

All being well there with be a video to watch soon.

Windmill Hill Arts Trail.

This impressive dinosaur is built onto a tandem bike and can be cycled around, wicked or what?. We were looking around Windmill hill arts trail at the weekend and somebody we were chatting to had seen it earlier parading the streets so we went in search of it. We found it on display in the garden of Trevor Houghton, who I realised as we arrived is someone I have met a number of times before. I have seen him and Emma do some really beautiful political shows using cut out drawings, a video camera and a projector. They are part of the ‘Other Story’ puppetry collective, who tell stories that connect us to each other across place and time. I get the feeling these are people of many tallents, there were solar pannels all over the place and when I asked Trevor about it he told me he is part of a groip who run workshops showing people how to build em themselves. Check out to find out more. I can’t help but love these guys.

Greek Mythology

Since childhood I have been fascinated by the adventures of characters such as Hercules and Perseus and artistically inspired by beasts such as the Minotaur and Medusa. So throughout 2012 I have been working on some shows telling some tales from Greek Mythology. There is such a cornucopia of stories to choose from it could be difficult to know where to begin, however it seemed to me that Zeus the king of the Gods was an excellent starting point seeing as he is such a naughty character and can hurl thunderbolts whenever he chooses. Here the rogue is.Zeus, The King of the Gods
