I qualified as a carpenter, after working for over three years for Jewell Plumbing and Property Maintenance Ltd, (JPPM) as a multi skilled tradesman. During this time, I gained a wealth of experience in many areas of building maintenance and refurbishment. Projects that I have been involved in include; fitting kitchens, bathrooms, and in both of these I would take on the woodwork and the tiling requirements, repairing of joists in rotten floors, plastering of walls and ceilings, decorating, full flat refurbishments, including putting in new doorways into supporting walls, first and second fix carpentry; door linings, architraves, skirtingboards, hanging doors, installing ironmongry, rehanging weighted sliding sash windows in period buildings and bespoke woodwork, in particular, custom made shelving.
Despite being reasonably adept at all the above mentioned skills, I was happiest when working as a carpenter and knew that if I wanted to realy progress and be successful, then I would need to concentrate in a particular area. Carpentry was my choice, because for me, working with wood is more than a job, it’s a passion.
So, I decided to a workplace assessed NVQ2 in Site Carpentry, with a company called Super Skills. They provide training and assesment for NVQs in many areas if the building industry and provide qualifications which are assesed by the awarding body, who were set up by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB)
Following my qualification, I decided to set up Hykel Carpentry, but still maintain an excellent relationship with JPPM Ltd, and take on carpentry work for them as a sub contractor.
