The Progress of Zeus

Okay, so following on from the Carving Zeus’ Head posts here is a quick explaination of the stages involved in getting Zeus to the stage in the picture above.

Once the paper mache had dried it was painted with acrylic paint. The inside of the mouth parts were lined with felt and then the bottom jaw was hinged to the head with leather attached with contact adhesive.

Fake fur was then cut and under the jaw, stitched into shape to give Zeus his beard. This too was then attached with contact adhesive.

Polyester fleecing reinforced with leather was glued to the back of the head to act as a neck. There is a hole cut so a hand can have access to operate the mouth.

20121129_163907The shoulders were then carved into shape, hollowed out to reduce weight and a slit cut for the neck to join into.

The head was then joined to the shoulders. It’s important to make sure the mouth can move without bumping into the body as this is restrictive in performance.20121129_164148
